The first major Saloon Car event at the Xpress Printing House Ruapuna Speedway in over thirty years provided some great action when the DHL Southern Series was contested on Friday evening.
Steve Williams, who is perhaps better known as Tiger Woods Golfing caddy, came within an ace of taking out the fourth round of the series but he had to settle for second place behind Tauranga’s Paul Cressy, with Auckland’s Paul Towgood third.
The series which see 26 drivers racing on six different tracks over six consecutive days was keenly contested with Williams having his best return to date finishing in fifth and second place in his two heats and then took the chequered flag in the dash. Williams lead the feature early on but was overtaken by Cressy on the third lap with Williams then making a late charge at Cressy over the last few laps but was unable to retake the lead.
Overall series leader, Aaron Tonks, who races out of the Huntly track had to qualify for the feature from the B Main finished in seventh place in the feature to take his points tally to 255, eleven clear of Nigel Ross (Auckland) with Towgood a rather two points back in third place. Williams move up six places on the points table and currently holds nineteenth position after losing ground when car problems robbed him of any points at the Dunedin round in Thursday.
There was plenty of pulsating action among the sprintcar racing in a prelude to the War of the Wings series. Glenn Everett took out the opening heat after Jamie Duff retired when looking to have the race won, from Ray Baughan and Danny Mayson. Mayson won the second heat from Matt Honeywell and Duff.
The feature event had a dramatic finish with Greg Clemence who was making his season debut in his new American built 'Retro' chassis , leading from the opening lap, but he had Baughan and Mayson in hot pursuit. A yellow flag with two laps to go bunched the field up and on the restart Clemence continued to dominate the race but on the final lap Baughan muscled his way to the front with Mayson also getting by. Baughan was first over the finish line but was relegated a place which gave Mayson his second win on the night.
Ricky Brett was again the stand out driver in the TQ class winning three of the four races. A cleansweep was denied when he spun out in the second heat when he was challenging eventual winner, Glen Milroy for the lead. Brett was impressive when taking out the Feature dominating the race from the opening lap, going on to win by nearly three seconds.
