Nelson’s Nevil Basalaj took out the penultimate round of the Barry Butterworth Midgetcar Series at Ruapuna Speedway on Saturday evening, from Nick Marquet (Nelson) with Christchurch ’s Gary Chadwick in third place.
In the Feature it was Dunedin ’s Gavin Wilkie that lead for the opening laps from Nelson’s Andrew Brown but Brown’s raced ended when his rolled his car coming out on the Town bend. When the race resumes Chadwick took over the lead and a lap later Basalaj passed Chadwick with the Christchurch driver then having to fight Marquet for second spot which Marquet graded on the final lap.
Earlier in the meeting Chadwick has his best return of the season when winning two of his three heats and finished third in the other heat behind Basalaj and Marquet.
Jamie Duff was the pick of a small but quality field that contested the sprintcar races with the teenager winning three of the four 4 x 4 legs and then demolished the field in the Feature when taking the chequered flag by a massive margin of 7 seconds. Duff and Cromwell’s Jason Scott had a brief dice for the lead for the first two laps but once Duff took the lead he was never challenges as Scotti Savage then diced with Scott for second place which Scott managed to shake off in the last two laps.
The Three Quarter midgetcar class again turned in some close racing with six different drivers finishing in the top three of the heats with the wins only to New Zealand champion Glen Durie and Tom Lumsden. In the Feature Kimberley Yeatman held the lead for the first seven laps as Lindsay Bailey and Kyle Glover battled for second place. On the eighth lap Glover passed both Bailey and Yeatman and opened up a racing winning lead, with interest then on the minor placings. It was the fast finishing Ryan Stone that claimed second place after starting from tenth place with Nick Donald finishing in third place.
In the sidecar clas John Warwood and Laurie McMahon showed the way when going through the meeting unbeaten with Daryl Harris, Craig Johns and Kieran Harris each recording a win in the Modified Sprint section. Jay Basalaj was the pick of the Quarter Midget drivers with two seconds before going on to win the Feature.
