Christchurch driver, Jamie Duff won the final round of the Sprintcar War of the Wings at Ruapuna Speedway on Saturday evening from Ray Baughan and Matt Honeywell, both from Christchurch with Cromwell’s Jason Scott in four place. Duff came into the final round holding the overall lead in the series, from Baughan, with Danny Mayson who missed the final round in third place.
Baughan took out the first heat from Scott with Duff third to narrow Duff’s overall lead but Duff won the second heat from Honeywell with Baughan having to settle for third place. Michael Gourley won the third heat from Baughan with Honeywell third and Duff four.
This meant going into the Feature Baughan needed to finish three places ahead of Duff to take out the series win but it was Duff that took the early lead and he was never headed with Baughan having to settle for both second place in the race and the series with Honeywell’s third place in the Feature also enough to secure third spot in the series from Scott and Mayson.
Tom Lumsden was a deserved winner in the Modified Sprint Clay cup after dominating racing in the three qualifying heats to set the fastest time in each race when claiming a second and then a third placing before claiming a win in the final heat to earn the right to start from the front row for the Cup final. Lumsden was untroubled to claim the checkered flag with Darryl Harris claiming second place from Brett Robinson.
There was some spirited racing among the Three Quarter Midget class with racing having a best pairs format. Having the three heats the top four sides were separated by just a handful of points with Ryan Stone and Gareth Bindon finishing on top two points ahead of the Kyle Glover of Kimberley Yeatman pairing with Rachel Melrose and Ben Gilmour in third place but a point from Glen Durries and Brian Fridd.
Nelson’s Nevil Basalaj and local Bryce McCall were locked in a real battle for honour's in the Midget racing with Basalaj winning twice to McCall’s once with Dunedin's Gavin Wilkie claiming third place in each race.
In the development races Alex Borham finished his Ministock career on a winning note when winning the Feature, along with other heat win and a second with Matt Leversedge the pick of the Quarter midget drivers.
