Local driver Jamie Duff capped off a succesful nights racing when he took out the feature race at the Xpress Printing House Ruapuna Speedway on Saturday.
The feature race doubled as the first round of the 'War of the Wings' Sprintcar Series and Duff, who has only been racing the powerful V’8 ‘winged’ cars for a handful of years, backed up his fourth place in the opening heat with a win in his next heat where the teenage set the fastest lap time of the meeting stopping the clocks at 13.73 seconds.
These placings gave him a start on the front row of the Feature alongside eight time New Zealand champion, Allan Wakeling, of Auckland, who secured two second placings from his heat races to be the top points scorer from the qualifying races.
In the final Wakeling took the lead from the start closely followed by Duff and Ray Baughan. On lap four the Aucklander was forced to retire with an engine problem which left Duff in control of the race.
Behind him there was a titanic battle being waged between Baughan and Honeywell. Duff was lapping some of his rivals with five lap remaining with Honeywell finally passed Baughan in the closing laps while Baughan then having to defend his third placing from the fast finishing Danny Mayson.
All three TQ races were keenly contested as drivers build to the national title that will be held at Ruapuna in January with Rachel Melrose and Blair Warren taking out the heats with Glen Durie winning the Feature from Dick Webb and Glen Milroy.
Racing in the midgetcar class was also close with three drivers taking the chequered flag with Nelson’s Nevil Basalaj who won the second heat press David Kerr all the way in the Feature with the two cars locked together for most of the race with Kerr holding on for the win by a car length.
Tom Lumsden was the pick of the driver’s in the Modified Sprint class with a win and two second placings with Lumsden having to setlle for second place in the Feature behind Keith Brough.
In the development classed Matt Leversedge was unbeaten in the quarter midgets with James Thian the pick in the MiniStocks with a win and a seconds from his two starts.
